摘要(Abstract):

People in the same collectivity who share the same language, life style and festivals would acquire the same cultural memory which would help them develop same identities. So the Indo-Fijians and the indigenous Fijians would surely have the different identity. As a result, the cultural and ethnic conflicts between them have become a noticeable social issue in Fiji. According to the analysis of the different cultural memories depicted in the short story "The Celebration," which is based on the theory of functional memory, the three generations in the story who represent the Indian immigrants and their descendants have kept, inherited and overturned the Indian cultural memory respectively under the different circumstances to acquire different types of identities. Therefore, a conclusion is made that the social issues caused by immigration could be resolved only if Indo-Fijians and indigenous Fijians promote cultural tolerance and mélange between them and regard their respective cultural memory as a component of multicultural society in Fiji.
