摘要(Abstract):
Henry James was not only a prolific novelist but also a prolific letter writer. What dominated James' s life was literature. His correspondence recorded the struggle of his life. James' s social experience, emotional life and artistic creation are all immersed in his numerous letters, which will constitute the real and best biography of the great literary master. The editing and publishing of Henry James' s letters has undergone a historical evolution in different editions. In the study of Henry James' s letters, this paper attempts to combine the construction of James' s image with the criticism of James' s works, by following the evolving track of James' s letter editing and publishing across time and space. Through the comparison and analysis of "Lubbock's Edition," "Edel's Edition" and "Nebraska Edition," it tries to explore the underlying cultural causes behind them, so as to identify the historical position of James' s personal letters in the development of popular culture and modern literature, and provide a useful reference for the academic study of Henry James, especially for the study of Henry James' s letter writing in China today.
