In American World Literature: An Introduction, Paul Giles aims to correct the nationalist slant in mainstream American literary historiography, and to reveal the multidimensional interplay between American literature and the world. The book is groundbreaking in both methodologically proposing the American world literary theory and systematically narrating the history of American world literature from the colonial period to the 21 st century. By analyzing the academic context within which Giles embarks on his studies, this review attempts to elucidate his theoretical construction of American literary world, and to summarize his commentary on the dynamics between American literature and the wilder world, hence the outline of American world literature will be presented, and the significance of the work will be explored.
