摘要(Abstract):

Although expert in depicting urban secular life, James Joyce was well acquainted with the occult philosophy prevalent among Irish intellectuals of his time and there is no lack of occult elements in his works. In Ulysses and Finnegans Wake, Joyce trenchantly satirizes Mrs. Blavatsky and George Russell, respectively the founder of the Theosophical Society and the spiritual leader of the Dublin Lodge, thereby denying the existence of the Absolute and exposing the irrationality of the Irish Literary Revival. Meanwhile, he artfully appropriates the concept of cycle in Indian occult philosophy and applies it to the structure of Finnegans Wake, constructing a unique temporal-spatial order out of chaos.
